Welcome to Macaroni Kid

Issaquah, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City

Is it me, or are all of you in denial that Halloween is almost here, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas and, gasp, New Years?  I swear I was just ringing in New Year 2011 with our friends, and now I'm putting the final touches on my daughter’s Halloween costume, making dinner reservations for Thanksgiving, and filling our December calendar with holiday parties and Santa visits!

They, whoever "they" are, say that time goes faster and faster with each passing year.  This seems completely backwards to me.

When we were young we wanted time to go faster...we wanted to be older so that we could drive or vote or go to bars.  We wanted the school years to fly by at lightning speed so that we could get to summer vacation faster.  And, summer vacation was the only thing that did go by way too quickly.

As we get older, we want to cherish each day by watching our children grow, spending precious time with our parents and just enjoying what our lives have become.  We value our friendships more.  We enjoy things on a level we could never imagine as a child.

With age comes more and more responsibility and stress.  Sometimes it would be nice just to be five again...  having my biggest worries be who would I play with it at recess and what did my mom pack for lunch.  Knowing what I know now, I would have cherished those care-free days a lot more!

I assume some of you are shaking your head in agreement with me and some of you might even be thinking, “Hmm...  Maybe this year I should consider making dinner reservations for Thanksgiving too!”

And for those that aren't quite ready to think of Thanksgiving, check out "This Week's Picks" for TONS of Halloween events!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Pam Lindner

Ms. Lindner, from Briarwood Elementary, wins October Teacher of the Month!

Snoqualmie Valley-Issaquah Macaroni Kid, The Cascade Team, The Woodman Lodge, Therapeutic Health of North Bend and Issaquah Trophy & Awards would like to congratulate Ms. Pam Lindner from Briarwood Elementary School for being named Teacher of the Month for October 2011.

One of Ms. Lindner's students nominated her, and had this to say:

Pam has taken over the science/tech program at Briarwood.  Last year was her first year in the program and her partner left her teaching career this year.  Pam has worked all summer to build the program into a parents dream for their student.  She is especially focused on the basics of learning-reading, writing, and math.  She has worked with her new partner to re-capture the building block of what makes children successful (challenges)!  She has a wonderful focus, not only bringing the kids up to grade level, but also challenging all of the students to advance.  Her love of teaching is obvious to the kids as well as the parents.  Pam is a teacher driven to teach.  I am thankful my child has been given the opportunity to be in this program with her.  I would hope the Issaquah School District expands this program and gives more teachers the opportunity to go beyond the tools set before them and customize their classroom to meet the needs of all student (advanced or challenged) so that all students are moving forward.

Ms. Lindner teaches 5th Grade Science Tech at Briarwood Elementary in the Issaquah School District.

Please join us in congratulating this amazing teacher!

October's Family Column by Katie Ramsburgh

Feel free to email your questions to Katie

Q: My daughters are 10 and 8. They are good friends, but they fight all of the time. I’d like to give them some skills to solve problems and end conflict. What do you suggest?

A: It can be exhausting to feel like you’re doing the job of a UN Peacekeeper just to keep the peace in your home. I think that there are a couple of helpful things you can do.

First, I am a big fan of discussing how to handle conflict when there is no ...

3 Tips for going green this Halloween

1. Reduce – Instead of handing out handfuls of candy to each little ghost and goblin, consider giving just one of something. You‘ll save money and your decision will likely be better for the health the children who come to your door (since they‘ll consume less) and for the planet since fewer resources will go into the making, packaging, transporting and/or disposal of the treat. Reducing can be applied to all of your holiday choices. And if you have reason to be concerned that your guests, kids, neighbors ...
