Family-friendly Local Happenings from Macaroni Kid

Issaquah, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City

Even more than Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, or those delightful winter holidays, we love the Fourth of July!  Both Dana and I were married on the 4th … not to each other, of course.  But we find it quite a coincidence that we picked the same day to say, “I do!"

This holiday is deeply rooted in history. The Fourth of July is a day to show our patriotism.  It is also a day to spend with family and friends.  A day of traditions and celebrations.  Don your red, white, and blue.  Fire up the grill or pack a picnic.  Watch a parade.  Run a race.  Play in the water.  Watch a baseball game.  Enjoy a spectacular fireworks display.  Participate in the many community events taking place this weekend ... and listed right here at Macaroni Kid, your source for all the family-friendly happenings!

In fact, there is so much going on, we’re tired just from putting all of those events in one place!   So we’re guessing (you and) your kids are sure to be entertained, stimulated, and exhausted this weekend!

This Week’s Picks focus on 4th of July events, and This Week’s Calendar is overflowing with things to do all week long.  Just a reminder that some regular weekly events listed may not be taking place on Wednesday, July 4th; please plan to call ahead to confirm!

Here’s to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!  Happy Independance Day!

Get set for an awesome summer ... and don't forget to tell your friends about this little gold mine, affectionately known as Macaroni Kid!

We hope you have a wonderful week!

Out & About: Sammamish Parks

There are plenty of spots to getaway on the Plateau!  In fact, Sammamish has some of my most favorite parks - each for a different reason!

Beaver Lake Park - We especially love the south side of the park where you'll find a nice play structure and covered pavillion - perfect spot for a craft playdate.  There is also a dog park toward the back, and unpaved hiking paths connect the north (where you'll find the lake and lodge) and south sides of the park.
  • Restrooms:  Nice facilities with flush toilets ...

Are You Consistent with Discipline?

Katie’s Monthly Family Advice Column

Are you consistent with discipline?
Before doling out consequences do you offer a do-over? Sometimes that's all it takes to right a difficult parenting situation. When your child takes a toy out of another child's hands, refuses to share, or calls a friend a mean name, this is a great parenting opportunity to offer a do-over. It can be as simple as, "would you like to try that again with a friendly voice?" If the behavior continues and you find that you need to give your child consequences ...

What is Apraxia of Speech?

What is Apraxia of Speech?

You may have heard the term “Apraxia of Speech,” or “Childhood Apraxia of Speech; CAS,” whether your child has been diagnosed, or you know of a friend with this speech disorder.  It is a motor disorder, causing a child to have difficulties voluntarily moving their speech muscles (e.g., lips, tongue, velum, jaw).  Specifically, it is a problem with the ability to plan movements (praxis).  This disorder can be extremely frustrating for both the child and his/ her family, as they know what they want ...
