Summer to September Transition with Macaroni Kid

September 3, 2015
We know that September 1st and 2nd were much anticipated days! The first day of school has come and gone for most kids in our local public school districts with SVSD kindergartners and some preschoolers still waiting for their big day. Chances are you'll be spending more time in the carpool pickup line, so we're sharing some practical ways to pass that time.

We are coming to grips with the end of summer and gearing up for a fantastic fall!  The month of September is about so much more than backpacks and sharpened pencils ... there are plenty of reasons to celebrate and local events to attend!

7: Labor Day and NO SCHOOL

11: Make Your Bed Day - how can your kids possibly argue with that?!

11-27: Washington State Fair - head to Pullayup for amusement rides, entertainment, and more!

12: Pants Party at Eastside Baby Corner - donate pants and enjoy some FREE family fun!

12: Family Concert at Springfree Trampoline - rock out with The Not Its!, bounce on the world's safest trampoline, and donate school supplies to benefit HopeLink.

13: Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day - Let the kids cook for a change of pace; maybe even try our easy Veggie Soup recipe.  While we're talking about food, celebrate all that is fresh, delicious, local and sustainable at the first ever CHOMP! Festival, a day full of interesting and unique experiences for the whole family.

13: Grandparent's Day
- give a shout-out to the higher branches of your family tree with this easy craft and gift from our archives.

16: National Play Doh Day - no kid can resist this quintessential childhood toy! Put old crayons to good use by making your own play dough with this recipe.

18: National Cheeseburger Day
- grill up your own or head to one of many great local burger joints.  After you indulge, burn off those extra calories with a trip to one of our Favorite Local Parks & Playgrounds or perhaps you'll be inspired to sign up for a local Walk, Race, and Ride.

19: MK AOK Day (Macaroni Kid Act of Kindness Day) - this is your chance to work together as a family to support a local non-profit, express appreciation, or give to those in need.

19: Talk Like a Pirate Day - "Any buccaneer to enter a participating Krispy Kreme and talk like a pirate gets one FREE Original Glazed® doughnut.  To the landlubber who dares to wear full pirate attire goes a bounty of one FREE dozen Original Glazed doughnuts."

21: Wife Appreciation Day
- make sure your MacDaddy knows about this one because it's the perfect excuse for a date night!

26: Book Swap at Recology CleanScapes - bring gently loved books into the Recology CleanScapes store in Gilman Village any time between now and September 25, go back on the 26th to trade for new books, one of our favorite ways to recycle!

All month long is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  We hope you'll take the time to learn about the Ben Towne Foundation, Callie's Coffee, and the upcoming Accelerate the Pace 5/10K and Kid's Dash.

Wishing you a wonderful first full week of school!
