Summer Nature Experiences for the Whole Family

Lake Sammamish State Park, Cedar River Watershed, and More!

Raise the level of your outdoor experience by participating in one of this organized Summer Nature Programs hosted by knowledgeable community members.  You'll get outside and you'll learn something new!

SUMMER NATURE PROGRAMS AT LAKE SAMMAMISH STATE PARK

Wanda Peters, state parks interpretive specialist, has created an exciting line-up of special nature programs at Lake Sammamish State Park for people of all ages this summer beginning June 25 through Labor Day weekend.  All programs are free! Remember your Discover Pass!

MINI RANGERS | Thursdays, beginning June 30 through August 25 | 10 to 11 a.m.
Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents will enjoy a Mini Rangers program—a time when adults and preschoolers will explore nature together. Wanda plans stories, puppets and more. No sign-up necessary.

JUNIOR RANGERS | Saturdays, beginning June 25 through September 3 | 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Bring your kids age 6 to 10 years old for Junior Ranger nature programs at the Sunset Beach Bathhouse. Explore the wild and wonderful world of nature right at Lake Sammamish State Park. Junior Ranger programs include nature walks, environmental games and activities, and nature crafts. Be prepared to get dirty and have fun while learning about the plants, animals, insects, amphibians and birds that live in the park. Parents are welcome to accompany their children and participate. For the safety and well-being of the children, we ask parents to be in the area and accessible during the program.

NATURE NOOK | Saturdays and Sundays, beginning June 25 through September 4 | Noon to 1:30 p.m.
Explore the Nature Nook at Sunset Beach Bathhouse. Let nature surprise you as you see nests and skulls, feathers and tracks and other bits of nature ‘up close.’ This is not a structured program; all ages are welcome and participants come as go as they please.

SUNDAY NATURE FUN DAY | Sundays, beginning June 26 through September 4 | 2 to 3 p.m.
Join Wanda for outdoor fun in nature for all ages, including nature games, exploration and discoveries in some of the wilder places of the park. Old clothes and walking shoes recommended.

CEDAR RIVER WATERSHED EDUCATION CENTER

NONTOXIC PRINTMAKING | Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, July 16 | 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Stop By for a printmaking workshop with artist Eunice Kim. Visitors will be able to create unique artwork using a portable printing press and a new series of art plates Eunice has designed, celebrating the Cedar River Watershed.  No Registration Required - Open House event, so stop by when you can!

JUNIOR NATURALISTS | 
Wednesday, July 20 and 27 | 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Kids 4-10 years old bring an adult to explore nature as a naturalist! We will hear like deer, rustle like raccoons and bounce like bobcats. Be ready to walk 1.5 miles and dress for the weather as we discover signs of animals on land and in water.  Cost is $5 (adults free)  Register: http://www.seattle.gov/util/crwec/

KNEE HIGH NATURALISTS | 
Thursday, July 21 and August 25 | 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Take a morning stroll from the Cedar River Watershed Education Center along Rattlesnake Lake with a naturalist to discover rocks, birds, plants and things. Paced for short legs and shorter attention spans, this program will explore shapes, colors, and textures found in nature. Up to two children (ideal for ages 18-36 months) can be registered per adult.  

FAMILY WATERSHED TOUR | 
July 9 and every Saturday-Sunday through September 4 | 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
This is a 1-hour version of the Watershed Tour. Popular with multi-generational families, it's bound to delight young and curious minds with short attention spans. Includes a drive through historic Cedar Falls and a walk on Masonry Dam. Walking distances of 1/4 mile across uneven surfaces is necessary on this tour.  Cost is $5 (adults free)  Register: http://www.seattle.gov/util/crwec/

MOUNTAIN TO SOUND GREENWAY

HIDDEN TRAILS OF COUGAR MOUNTAIN | Saturday, July 30, 2016 | 8:30am to mid-late afternoon
Discover some of the lesser known trails of Cougar Mountain--situated in-between Issaquah and Bellevue--which are prized for their beauty and solitude. This is an incredible opportunity to discover the hemlock, Douglas fir, huckleberry, and salmonberry forests and the deep history of Cougar Mountain and Coal Creek. We will hike 11 miles from the eastern end of Cougar Mountain, in Issaquah, across to the western flank, and then meander along Coal Creek until we arrive at the shores of Lake Washington. Cost is $30 per person; Pre-Registration Required.

MEADOWBROOK FARM

WALK TO BIG CEDAR | July 23 | 10:00AM-12:00PM
Imagine a tree 500 years old! Take a short hike to see this living, valley floor old growth forest giant, and learn about the many ways Native Americans and early pioneers used cedar in their everyday lives. Ideal short two mile hike for families with children. Local botanical discussion en-route. Meet at Meadowbrook Farm Interpretive Center; dress for the weather and wear boots that can handle several inches of water!

SAMMAMISH WALKS SERIES

Walks are led by volunteers – wildlife experts, naturalists, photographers, parks commissioners and others – all of them knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our regional parks and trails. Bring your cameras or binoculars but leave your dogs at home as we will be focusing on plants and wildlife.

SAMMAMISH LANDING TRAIL WALK | July 23, 10:00 AM
We will explore the naturalized shoreline, stroll along the East Lake Sammamish trail to Weber Point, and enjoy fabulous dockside views.  Interesting anecdotes about the history of our area will be shared along the way. 

EVANS CREEK PRESERVE | August 6, 10:00 AM
Join naturalist Elby Jones who will leading the walk through the meadows and wetlands, along trails and over boardwalks.  This open space includes a segment of Evans Creek, along the Redmond/Fall City Highway (202) with large areas of wetlands, steep slopes, and open meadow areas.  Hawks, songbirds, deer, bear, and beavers traverse the terrain.

PINE LAKE PARK “Artful Experience” | August 20, 10:00 AM
Bring your inner artist and your outdoor shoes.  This experience, suitable to all ages, is an introduction to nature drawing workshop and walk.

BIG ROCK PARK Children’s Walk | September 17, 10:00 AM
This event is tailored for young walkers and led by Nature Vision guides who are experienced in introducing children to the wonders of our natural environment.  A beautiful property, Big Rock Park was named in recognition the huge boulder deposited during the last ice age and located along one of the well-marked and well-groomed trails.
