February 29th is Leap Day

Next week, on February 29, we'll celebrate Leap Year with one extra day in 2012. Is it an actual holiday? Probably not. But, you can make the extra day extra-special for your family with some themed games, activities and treats, making Leap Year something to look forward to every four years!

Big Backyard encourages families to get outside for some Leap Year fun. Their suggestion include building and jumping hurdles and playing leap frog.

Or, if you want to keep your celebration indoors, create an origami jumping frog or go on a frog hunt

It's no celebration without snacks, so whip up some Leap Year Frog Cookies

The frog may be the unofficial mascot of Leap Year, but you can create a great celebration that includes any leaping or hopping animal! Find some more Leap Year ideas on our Leap Year Board on Pinterest!

Dr. Suess was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts.  His 44 children's books have thrilled many children throughout the years with imaginative characters and tongue twisting rhymes.  His books have been translated into more than 15 languages and sold more than 200 million copies.

To celebrate the birthday of such a famous author, check out these local events:

I've been pinning for Dr. Seuss' Birthday on Pinterest.

Cat in the Hat dot to dot (printable- includes numbers 1 to 78)

Can you match the Dr. Suess character with the name (online, takes a bit to load the graphics.)

Cat in the Hat Coloring Page (Make sure you change your printer setting so it prints on one page.)

Dr. Suess Word Search Puzzle (Includes names of characters.  Best suited to a child who is reading well.)

All-time favorite Dr. Seuss quote:

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities. -- Dr. Seuss
