September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September 18, 2014
Each year in the US nearly 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Roughly one in four will not survive their battle.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The goal is to shed light on types of cancers that affect children and the issues that arise when a family receives a diagnosis. Ultimately the goal is to raise funds for research to find ways to cure and end all types of pediatric cancers.

This is your chance to support those fund raising efforts, and we encourage you to consider these options.

Cookies for Kids Cancer
One organization that has demonstrated a unique and passionate commitment to the cause is Cookies for Kids' Cancer.  "Through the concept of local bake sales, Cookies for Kids' Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities, and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer."

As part of Do Something Great Day, we are hosting a Cookies for Kids' Cancer Bake Sale on Saturday, September 20 during the Snoqualmie Valley Block Party.  Bring your sweet tooth and know that 100% of proceeds will benefit pediatric cancer research.

Ben Towne Foundation
Ben Towne Foundation (bentownefoundation.org) was created with one goal in mind, to see the end of pediatric cancer. When the Towne family lost their son Ben to neuroblastoma, they knew his story wasn’t finished.  The foundation bearing his name is partnered with the Center for Childhood Cancer Research, which officially opened its doors here in Seattle in July 2011. Dr. Michael Jensen, the director of the new Center, is leading research that will radically change the way pediatric cancers are treated — and cured.

You can support those groundbreaking research efforts by participating in the “Accelerate the Pace” 10k/5k & Kids Dash event on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Marymoor Park in Redmond.  All proceeds will be invested in research accomplished at the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research.

Callie's Coffee
Callie’s Coffee was inspired by seven year old Callie Lentz’s desire to help cure pediatric cancer.  Callie’s young friend, Ben Towne, died from an incurable form of neuroblastoma.
At age 6, Callie asked her parents to donate the contents of her piggy bank to Ben’s foundation, and at age 7 she came up with the idea of selling coffee to further the foundation’s cause.  This is truly the story of a kid making a difference, and you can help by purchasing Callie's Coffee ... to drink yourself every morning or to give as a gift to a coffee-lover.  Every sip you take will be one sip closer to helping find a cure for Pediatric Cancer.
