Partnering in Literacy

By Sharilyn Lux, Lux Language Partners (lux-language.com) October 23, 2014
Aside from offering tutoring services in Spanish and in English, Lux Language Partners is dedicated to promoting literacy outside the Snoqualmie Valley.

One of the partner organizations that we dedicate effort to helping is PROBIGUA of Guatemala.  We donate one dollar from each lesson we teach to PROBIGUA.

PROBIGUA has been recognized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and given an "Access to Learning Award" for its work.  They operate as a Spanish Immersion school for travelers, in the heart of the Spanish influenced town of Antigua.

Antigua is a town known for it's concentration of immersion Spanish schools to students world-wide, and it also serves as a stopping point for many travelers on their way to visit the ruins of Tikal.  It is set in the mountainous region of Guatemala.  Antigua is a romantic town, with cobblestone streets, high archways and doors, dating back to the time of the conquest.  The town is surrounded by active volcanoes and jungle like flora and fauna.  The architecture reflects the Spanish influence and is painted in traditional Latin American influence with vibrantly colored, freshly painted historic buildings.

Unlike any other language school in Guatemala, PROBIGUA dedicates its profits to giving back to the impoverished nation of Guatemala.  Nearly 50% of the people in Guatemala are illiterate, the lowest literacy rates in all the Americas.  The proceeds from this great little school go to fund a mobile library, for schools that do not have libraries or books, right on the outskirts of Antigua.   The bus also travels hours deep into the rural mountainous areas to reach beautiful villages, inhabited by mainly indigenous people, that populate the volcanic jungle land of this country.

In addition to delivering library services and access to books where books are scarce and libraries are non-existent, PROBIGUA works to fund the education of teacher within Guatemala, so that they can return to their villages and teach the children.
