We are holding a school supply drive to bring school supplies in person to Yelapa, Mexico in mid March 2015.  We will travel to spend time relaxing in this little fishing village and at the same time, volunteer a couple of hours per day at the Yelapa Public School, working with primary school students, in Spanish.

The village of Yelapa, is located a 40 minute boat ride from Puerto Vallarta, on the seventh largest bay in the world, the Bahia de Banderas.  The school is a very basic one-room school, that serves half the day as the primary school, and shares the building with secondary school students for use the other half of the day, due to limited resources.  In addition, the school has a hard time maintaining full-time teachers to complete a school year, due to the lack of consistent funding and other issues.

A handful of people, mainly from the west coast of the US and Canada, that spend time in the village each year, are working hard, volunteering to help gather resources for the school, and offer a school well-staffed with teachers equipped to work with the students.  This is a goal in progress.  The school also lacks an adequate library, compared to our standards, so we would like to help build the inventory inside the library.

Each book counts!
We are requesting gently used or new children's book in Spanish and English and/or just Spanish, as this is an indigenous village, where many of the children are learning Spanish secondary to a native language spoken in the home.  In addition we would be thankful for basic school supplies: pencils, hand pencil sharpeners, colored pencils, writing paper, and small books of art paper, rulers, children's safety scissors, erasers, maps, and small writer's notebooks.  The items need to be small, as they will be hand carried, including a boat ride to reach the village.

For more information on the needs of the school, there is a list that the school has posted. If you would like to donate school supplies, please contact us on Facebook at Lux Language Partners or through our website www.lux-language.com, or drop them off at the Black Dog Coffee shop in downtown Snoqualmie on Railroad Avenue, in our donation drop box by March 9, 2015.

Make sure to attach your contact information, including full name, email, and phone number, so that we can enter you in the drawing to win free Spanish lessons!  One winner will be drawn and announced on facebook and our website on March 10th, 2015!
