5 Ways To Manage Screen Time In Your Family

By Arlene Pellicane, MamaCon 2015 Keynote April 23, 2015
Being a great mom requires so many different skills which are often learned “on the job” of parenting. What if there was a place to go for some professional development for moms? Now there is! Seattle-based parenting experts Amy Lang, founder of Birds + Bees + Kids, and Kim Estes, founder of Savvy Parents Safe Kids, created MamaCon, a conference just for moms!

MamaCon is a parenting conference, a women's conference, a girlfriend getaway and a chance for moms to relax, learn and laugh. Held May 15-16 in Lynnwood, WA, you don’t want to miss this chance for a timeout from your juggling act. Visit www.MamaCon.net for tickets and information.

Mamacon includes a full line-up of speakers providing insights on a wide spectrum of topics from ending the Mommy Wars to bully-proofing your child.

This year's Keynote Speaker is Arlene Pellicane, co-author of Growing Up Social: Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World, and she has shared with us tips for forming new digital habits.

5 Digital Resolutions for Your Family:

We will not text, tweet, or play video games at mealtime – Set aside at least 4 meals a week where you sit down as a family for conversation and fun, no screens allowed.

We will turn off screens one hour before bedtime – Staring at a bright screen before bedtime keeps kids awake, so turn off electronic devices one hour before bedtime to avoid stimulating adrenaline and preventing sleep.

We will set and keep daily time limits on screen time
– The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 2 hours or less of screen time for your child age 2-18.  Your limit may be higher, but at least set a limit or else all free time tends to go to screens.

We will enforce consequences when rules are broken
– What battles do you anticipate with screen time? Be clear about consequences (make them fair) and consistent about enforcement.

We will not criticize or yell at our family members online or by texting – Don’t use social media as a megaphone to trash your family member.  Instead learn to communicate face to face when there’s a problem.  Keep your texts and posts positive and complimentary.

Which will you choose?  Any digital resolutions to add to the list?   Attend this year's Mamacon to hear what Arlene Pellicane has to say about How To Raise Relational Kids in a Screen Driven World.
