For the person on your list who … has a practical side, strives to live a healthy lifestyle, wants to make a difference, eats organic, lives green, and celebrates with gusto!
This past September - during a online search for Halloween events - I came across information about Green Halloween®, a non-profit grassroots movement started by a mom living right here in Issaquah. Corey Colwell-Lipson and her mom Lynn are working to create “healthier and more Earth-friendly holidays.” What started as a simple idea has become the catalyst for big changes in the way people are celebrating all year long.
Since my encounter with Green Halloween and my involvement in National Costume Swap Day, my thinking about holidays has been greatly impacted. I’ve been empowered to modify traditions with the health of myself, my family and the planet in mind. However I will admit that I really was a bit overwhelmed about how to start my new “greener” approach to the most festive times of year. Thankfully, the Green Halloween movement inspired the dynamic duo to form a company called Green Year and write a book called Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family
This quote from the book’s introduction encapsulates the authors’ intentions: “It (the book) was conceived as a means to bring together ideas that will stimulate you to think and act in ways that may be new to you when you celebrate life’s most important moments.”
The first chapter of the book is titled “Green Holiday 101” and provides insightful answers to FAQs about going green. The remainder of the book is organized by season and then broken down by holiday. There’s also a section dedicated to yearlong celebrations like birthdays and baby showers. Throughout the book, the authors give tips based on the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) as well as the 3Gs (Good for People, Good for Planet, Good for Community). From invitations and decorating to menu planning and gift ideas, Corey and Lynn provide real, feasible options for taking a greener approach to your celebrations. I especially love that such a serious and important topic is presented with humor and realistic expectations.
