Leprechaun Tricks and Traps

March 14, 2013
Leprechauns are notorious troublemakers. Don't believe me?  Just read That's What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting. It's a cute story of three leprechauns on their way to place the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow ... and the mischief they get into along the way.

Kids love mischief ... getting into it as well as seeing the work of leprechauns.  With a little creativity, your kids can wake up to a surprise visit from the leprechauns on St. Patrick's Day morning.

Try a few of these ideas - I am not a fan of messy, and remember simple things are delightful to kids ...

  • build a tower out of green blocks (pictured above)
  • leave a bag of Skittles in a funny place
  • set out a green plate and cup for breakfast
  • find all the green toys in your house and put them in unexpected places
  • prop up a stuffed animal with an open book like "Twas the Night Before St. Patrick's Day"
  • lined up all the babies, Barbies, action figures on the stairs - the audience for the book reading (pictured above)
  • turn all the chairs away from the table
  • put together a puzzle upside down - this is my daughter's favorite! (pictured above)
  • color the toilet water green
Last year my four year old decided - just before bedtime on St. Patrick's Eve - that we should catch a leprechaun and make him take us to his pot of gold. How do you catch a leprechaun? With a Leprechaun Trap, of course!  I've seen a lot of very crafty ideas for making traps, but we think it's more fun to use what you have around the house.  You can see a few examples in the photo above - we use building blocks, Legos, random toys and containers, ... and you have to have some bait like coins from your piggy bank!
