TOP LOCAL DAYTRIPS AND ATTRACTIONS FOR KIDS
- Autumn Spear
As promised….here is a list of some of the top local day trips and attractions for Kiddos…..the sun is coming out…time to get out and explore! Watch for more as the year goes on:)
- Whale-Watching Tours in the San Juan Islands: Sure, you can see orca whales perform at marine parks, but in the San Juan Islands during the summer, you can see genuinely free Willies, and lots of them. During whale-watching tours, minke whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles may also be spotted.
- Fort Worden State Park (Port Townsend): With a beach, old gun batteries, hiking trails, and a science center with tidepool touch tanks, this park is a big entertainment center for kids.
- Point Defiance Park (Tacoma): This gigantic city park at the north end of Tacoma packs in more fun stuff for kids than they could hope to do in a day. It has a zoo, a replica of a historic trading fort, and an old-time logging camp complete with full-size train.
- Long Beach: With minigolf, horseback riding, miles of wide beaches, and perfect winds for kite flying, this beach community on the southern Washington coast is the state's best family beach.
- Ride the Ducks of Seattle tour (Northeast corner 5th Ave. and Broad St.; $23/adult, $13/kids 12 and under; 441-DUCK). Amphibious World War II vehicles will show you Seattle “from both land and water with guides that provide fun, fun, fun.” On the 90-minute tour, you’ll see downtown Seattle, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, Funky Fremont and into Lake Union for a spectacular view of the city skyline. “Easy to find—right across from the Space Needle.”
- Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour (608 1st Ave., Pioneer Sq.; $14/adult, $7/kids 7-12; 682-4646). This 90-minute guided walking tour beneath Seattle’s sidewalks and streets is “best for kids over 8.” It’s “not an Atlanta underground, but it may be some day. Still, a great insight into the early days of this good city.”
- Madison Park (East Madison St. and East Howe St.). Has a “nice beach for swimming” and “good cafes in the neighborhood.”
- Green Lake playground (7201 East Green Lake Drive N). Slide, swing, and climb on the equipment, then skate or walk on the lake’s three-mile path. You can also swim in the lake (changing rooms, plus a summer lifeguard), or rent a paddle boat.
- Bloedel Reserve (Bainbridge Island; $10/adult, $6/kids 5-12; bookings 842-7631). Getting there, aboard a 35-minute car ferry, is half the fun. Grab a birdwatching guide and trail map, and off you go. Kids follow the path through forests, gardens, and fields.
- Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (3015 NW 54th St.; no fee; 783-7059). “A simply wonderful place to witness the annual salmon run.” Underwater observation windows let you view salmon as they leap up the locks’ fish ladder on their journey from Puget Sound into Lake Union and Lake Washington. (July-August is peak salmon season.)
· Skagit Valley Tulip Festival : Spring time is truly just around the corner and the tulips in Skagit Valley are confirming it! Current predictions are that the tulips in the big fields will begin to bloom the last few days of March. In addition, both festival gardens, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, will be open. Tulip Town will open March 26, six days early. Owner Jeannette DeGoede notes that that the early blooming varieties will provide a nice show for tulip fans. The late- and mid-blooming varieties at Tulip Town look to be right on track to ensure a good show throughout April. Tulip Town is at 15002 Bradshaw Rd., Mount Vernon, WA 98273
- Deception Pass State Park: Washington's favorite state park. Visitors flock to see the spectacular bridge and Pass. Because of Whidbey Island's temperate climate, many birds and waterfowl winter here, including an abundance of bald eagles. Fishing is popular in Cranberry Lake and in waters surrounding the Island. Sightseeing, dinner, and whale-watching cruises are available from many nearby businesses. Tent and RV camping are available year round. This park also boasts giant old growth forests, 30 miles of hiking trails. 19 miles of of saltwater shoreline, 3 freshwater lakes, 320 campsites. Scuba diving, saltwater and freshwater fishing. Spectacular views.

Daylight Savings Done Right
Quick tips for making the transition easier.

It's almost that time again (Sunday, March 14 at 2:00am) to switch our clocks! This time we get to spring ahead and enjoy many more hours of daylight, especially in the evenings!
Here are some helpful tips to make the transition easier.
1. Start shifting your child's bedtime: Several days before the time change, start putting your child to bed 15 minutes earlier each night.
2. Stick to your daytime routine: Continue to have meals, naps, bedtimes, etc at the same time as usual after the time change.
3. Expose them to bright light: Reprogram their internal clock faster by exposing your child to bright light first thing in the morning (indoor light is fine).
