Family-friendly Local Happenings from Macaroni Kid

Issaquah, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City

Well ... what is there to say after last week's crazy weather?  Heavy snows.  Ice storms.  Falling trees.  Power outages.  High winds.  And a ton of local events canceled.  I can't be the only one who hopes we don't have to endure that again anytime soon.

Once the power returned, we had to toss all the spoiled food from our fridge.  It was a pain, but on the bright side, we now have a super clean refrigerator!

Something you may not think of spoiling is medication.  Whether it's a circumstance where the temps get too high or in this case, too low, you should double-check your family medications to make sure they are still viable.

This was brought to my attention by one of our loyal subscribers and publisher of the Living Snoqualmie blog.  This is what Danna found out:  This is for kids who keep epi-pens at school ... because of the power outage, school building temperatures most likely fell below 59 degrees for 3 days, and parents should replace their child's epi-pens.   Epi-pen storage warning says "safe between 59-80 degrees".  She phoned NW Allergy and Asthma about her daughter's epi-pens and they said to be safe they should replace them.  Just wanted to pass this important information on.  It's better to be safe.

If you are tired of being couped up in the house, check out all the amazing things to do in our area this week (and be on the lookout for some rescheduled events from last week)...and these fabulous articles too:

Wishing you and your family a funfilled
(and much less winter wonderland) week ahead!

What Makes the Healthiest Kids on the Block?

Free Seminar January 31st, 6-8pm at the North Bend Library

So, what makes the healthiest kids on the block?

In the past 25 years, my practice has been filled with hundreds of children. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch children develop from the “womb to young adults” and made many observations about what influences their overall health. I have been able to see patterns  in the ways kids are raised that make the difference between them staying healthy, energetic and optimistic or being plagued with many chronic conditions like asthma, chronic allergies, ear infections, frequent colds and sinus problems ...

January's Family Column by Katie

Feel free to email your questions to Katie at anytime.

Question: What do I do when my kid throws a tantrum just as we are walking out the door?

Answer:  That’s a great question, and this has happened to all of us. Kids throw tantrums for many reasons, and you are the expert on your child. With the multitudes of books on parenting and discipline, it’s easy to second guess yourself. BUT, you should listen to your instincts.

Ask yourself, is this about getting my attention, avoiding school, or frustration about something that just happened? Once you’ve ...

Your Child’s Coming-of-Age Novel

Your Child’s Coming-of-Age Novel

Growing up can be confusing and stressful. For many great authors, however, coming of age was a source of inspiration. There are thousands of wonderful stories about growing up and maturing, and for many young (and older) readers, these stories are a comfort and support.

The term for this genre of literature is bildungsroman. Bildungsroman is a German word that means “education novel,” and describes literature that follows the protagonist from youth to adulthood. Over time, the term has come to generally represent the coming-of-age ...
