Grand Opening of Destination Playground at Lake Sammamish State Park

October 13, 2016
Have you heard about the “destination” all-access playground coming to Lake Sammamish State Park? Now the dream has come true!  The playground came to life through the work of the non-profit Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park, many local donors and volunteers, and Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.

Everyone is invited to the grand opening of the $1.1 million playground this Saturday, October 15, 2016. The ribbon cutting is scheduled to take place at 11:00 am - rain or shine or wind.  The first 50 children who arrive (ages 4-10) will be given souvenir scissors to help cut the ribbon … and then it’s play time!
The 8-foot-tall blue heron will greet visitors to the playground plaza. A sidewalk with frequent park benches surround the site. Rubber surfacing ensures accessibility for all, from strollers to wheelchairs.
The playground is designed for ages 2-12. The youngest ones will enjoy climbing up the toadstools into the mushroom house before they slide out the other side. Nearby is a mountain to climb, or explore inside the Issaquah Mining Co. coal mine to discover nuggets.
Ready to be challenged? Climb to the top of the 17-foot geodesic dome climbing net, or take a twirl on the rotating net. Next up — the zip line!
Of course, there are swings for all ages and twin towers with more slides. Talk to a friend through the talking tubes, or make music on the giant chimes. Take time to learn all about mushrooms and search for
hidden animals among the play structures. Bring your own checkers to challenge someone to a game.
The grand opening event is free, but those arriving by car must have an annual Discover Pass or pay a $10 per vehicle day fee.  Learn more at LakeSammamishFriends.org
