As the year comes to a close, now is the perfect time for you and your children to take a moment to reflect on the academic activity of the past year. Whether just starting pre-school or halfway through high school, it is worthwhile to look back on the past 12 months and plan ahead for the new year.
Take time to list all of the accomplishments and achievements that your children have experienced. In the midst of school work and extracurricular activities it’s important to remember that the year began in January – not September. Achievements from the current school year and the end of the previous one should be acknowledged and praised. Any Kumon achievements, like completing a level or reaching the Advanced Student Honor Roll, should be included along with school-related success. Think together about any common themes among your children’s successes and how to achieve more in the coming year.
Learning from mistakes is an invaluable way to make progress. If your children feel discouraged by past academic setbacks, look at completed Kumon worksheets side-by-side with a recent Kumon assignment. Show them how far they have come by highlighting new concepts they have learned or how much their completion time has improved. Mistakes are merely an opportunity to learn.
After reviewing the past year’s academic highs and lows, set goals with your children to decide how to continue to excel in the coming year. Goals can be as simple as reading a certain number of books by 2016, or as complex as mastering long division by spring break. Either way, goal-setting provides a guided path that can be followed as the year progresses and challenges, academic and otherwise, threaten to cause distractions.
Above all, a new year is an opportunity for a fresh start. Encourage your children to resolve to make this year even better than the last.
