7 Tips for Summer Reading ... Online Resources, Challenges, and More!

It’s no secret that kids who read during the summer months fare better on fall reading tests than kids who don’t. A great way to keep them reading is to participate in a Summer Reading Program!

Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination
Kids read any 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal. Bring the completed Reading Journal into a Barnes & Noble store between May 20 and September 2, 2014 and your child gets to choose a free book from the store's Summer Reading Program selection. King County Library System’s Summer Reading Program 
The library’s Fizz, Boom, Read program brings dozens of free events right to your neighborhood. When they sign up for the summer reading program at any KCLS library, children will receive a free Summer Handbook and a reading log to keep track of their reading. Each child who finishes Summer Learning will receive a Golden Ticket certificate and an entry form for Grand Prize Drawings.  A Kindle Fire will be given away at each KCLS library location. Little Free Library -  This 'take a book, return a book' phenomenon is the chance for neighbors - of all ages - to share their favorite stories.  Little Free Libraries are popping up all over the world, country, state, and within our own communities ... including a new one at  2308 E Lake Sammamish Pl SE.  You can find out more about Little Free Libraries, how to start your own, where to find existing ones, and more at littlefreelibrary.org

Sylvan Book Adventure
Your child reads a book and then takes a short comprehension quiz. Kids earn points based on how much they remember. Points can be traded in for prizes. Wired For Reading! at Encompass
To help children for whom reading is a struggle, Encompass now offers a proven, one-on-one program called Wired For Reading. This evidence-based linguistics program focuses on reading, spelling and vocabulary and really works to improve your child's reading and comprehension skills.  Sessions can be billed to insurance.
