How YOU and your KIDS Can Make a Difference - September 20, 2014

July 31, 2014
Perhaps you've heard?  Macaroni Kid has big plans for our Make a Difference Day in September.  The movement is starting out as a dandelion full of the potential to spread with just a bit of help from YOU.  We need to make sure more local parents know what we've got planned. Please like this article above so it will be seen and shared on Facebook.

Diana and I have a vision for Make a Difference Day, and we want to empower local parents and their kids to take on a community service project with our support.  You simply decide to make a difference and to model kindness for your kids.  You can support a local non-profit, express appreciation, or give to those in need.  Really the name says it all, Make a Difference - big or small, grand or subtle.

We are recruiting Ambassador Families who will commit to hosting an event on September 20 (or the week before) - anything from a lemonade stand or garage sale to a diaper drive or ice cream social.

Last week we inspired you with 14 project examples, and already we have our first Ambassador Family - the Parkers, who also recently created a Little Free Library in Sammamish.  Continuing with their passion to support literacy, they are planning a story time and book drive for Milk+Bookies at the new Let's Play Sammamish indoor play space.  We'll have more details for you soon!

This week I want to encourage you to talk with your family and think about how you can be a part of Make a Difference Day. Together we can figure out how to really make this happen!

1. Decide on a cause that's important to you and your family.

Are you concerned about families going hungry, animals without homes, babies who need diapers, kids who need books to read, ... ?

Do you want to make sure hardworking firefighters, librarians, or nurses know how much you appreciate what they do?

Would you like help find a cure for childhood cancer and other diseases?

2. Determine your goal and how to reach it.

If you want to raise funds, host a lemonade stand, bake sale, or garage sale. Partner with a local frozen yogurt shop or restaurant with percentage of sales going to your cause.

If you want to fill a need, host an event (game night, story time, park play date) and collect items (diapers, pajamas, dog food, etc.) at that time.

If you want to show appreciation or kindness, cook a meal, bake cookies, make cards, plan a day of Random Acts of Kindness!

If you want to improve the planet, organize a litter pick-up, plant trees, or educate people about a green topic.

3. Think about how to involve your kids.  Better yet, ask THEM how they'd like to help.

4. Utilize local businesses.Take it from someone who knows quite a few local business owners, they want to help. They will be happy to work with you.  And I am happy to connect you if needed!

Ultimately, you dream up the idea, and we will help make it happen.  Diana and I will connect you to local businesses who are willing to support our Make a Difference Day vision and your efforts.  We will serve as the media sponsor and handle online promotion and create and send a press release to local news outlets.  Print materials will be designed and distributed. Your event will be listed on our Calendar, and and you can count on a strong social media presence.  All of this will support your plans and encourage participation from other local families.

Together we can make a difference in our communities, and most importantly, we will impress upon our children the importance of kindness, compassion, and volunteering.
